By late August, Gotham Footcare’s appointment calendar fills with a very specific complaint: toenails that have quietly turned yellow, thickened, or begun to crumble at the edges. This is not a coincidence of timing. After a summer at rooftop pools, gym locker rooms, and communal showers, fungal organisms have had months of warm, moist opportunities to take hold in the nail bed. The visible damage often only becomes obvious once the season is nearly over. Understanding how toenail fungus spreads can help you protect your feet, and can help you avoid the same cycle next year.
Fungal organisms thrive in warm, damp, dark environments. Few places check every one of those boxes as reliably as a summer pool deck or gym locker room. Communal showers, pool decks, and locker room floors stay constantly damp, and bare feet cross them all day, creating an ideal breeding ground for the dermatophyte fungi behind most nail infections. Unlike a cold, fungal spores don’t spread through the air. They survive on surfaces for extended periods, so you can pick up an infection simply by walking barefoot across a contaminated floor, even hours or days after someone else did.
The infection itself develops slowly. Fungal spores typically enter through tiny cracks in the nail or surrounding skin, often invisible to the naked eye, and begin colonizing the nail bed over the following weeks. Early-stage Nail Fungus causes minimal visible change, so most people don’t notice anything unusual until the infection has been developing for a month or more. That’s why cases picked up in June and July often become visibly obvious by late August and September.
The earliest signs of toenail fungus are often subtle. You may notice a small white or yellow spot beneath the tip of the nail, or a faint discoloration along one edge, or a nail that looks slightly thicker than usual. As the infection progresses, the nail typically becomes more brittle. It may develop a crumbling texture at the edges and take on a distinctly yellow, brown, or even greenish tint. In more advanced cases, the nail may separate from the nail bed entirely or emit a faint odor.
Many people mistake these early signs for simple nail damage from tight shoes or an old stubbed toe. This is part of why fungal infections so often go untreated for months. Fungal infections do not resolve on their own. Left untreated, they typically worsen slowly over time, spreading to additional nails or reinfecting adjacent skin.
Toenail fungus and Athletes Foot are frequently caused by the same family of dermatophyte fungi. The two conditions often occur together. Athlete’s foot typically begins as itchy, peeling, or cracked skin between the toes. Left untreated, the same fungal organisms can migrate from the surrounding skin into the nail itself. This establishes a more stubborn infection that is considerably harder to treat once it takes hold in the nail bed. That’s one of the most important reasons to address any signs of athlete’s foot quickly, rather than waiting to see if it resolves on its own.
The single most effective prevention strategy is simple but frequently ignored: never walk barefoot in communal wet areas. Always wear waterproof sandals or flip-flops on pool decks, locker room floors, and public shower stalls, even for a quick trip to rinse off. This one habit alone dramatically reduces your exposure to the fungal spores that accumulate in these environments.
Keeping feet genuinely dry is equally important. Fungal organisms struggle to establish themselves on dry skin and nails. After swimming or showering, take the time to thoroughly dry between each toe rather than a quick pass with a towel. Moisture trapped between toes creates exactly the environment fungus needs to thrive. Breathable footwear and moisture-wicking socks also help during the summer months, particularly for anyone spending significant time at the gym in enclosed athletic shoes.
Regular inspection of your own nails and the inside of your gym bag matters too. Damp socks, shoes, or sandals stored in an enclosed bag can harbor fungal spores between uses. This effectively reinfects your feet each time you put them back on. Let athletic shoes fully air out and dry between wears, and wash socks in hot water, to help break this cycle.
Many patients arrive at our office after months of trying drugstore antifungal creams and lacquers without success. Topical over-the-counter treatments frequently struggle to penetrate deeply enough into the nail bed to fully eliminate an established infection. This is especially true once the fungus has spread throughout a thickened nail. That’s why infections that seem to improve temporarily so often return within a few months of stopping treatment.
At Gotham Footcare, we offer more advanced treatment options for cases that have not responded to over-the-counter care. Our ClearANail and microdrill treatments create tiny channels through the damaged portion of the nail. This lets topical medication reach the infection directly at the source instead of the nail’s protective surface blocking it. For patients dealing with nails that have already become significantly thickened or damaged, our Nail Restoration services can help repair the nail’s appearance and health once we’ve treated the underlying infection.
If you have noticed nail discoloration, thickening, or crumbling that has persisted for more than a few weeks, have your feet evaluated. Fungal infections rarely improve without targeted treatment. This is especially true for anyone managing diabetes or circulatory conditions. A seemingly minor nail infection can create a pathway for more serious complications if left unaddressed.
Patients who want an extra layer of protection and pampering during the summer season may also benefit from our Medical Grade Pedicure services. We perform these with sterile, single-use instruments in a clinical setting rather than a traditional nail salon, significantly reducing the risk of cross-contamination.
Toenail fungus is stubborn, but it is entirely treatable with the right approach. Addressing it early, before it spreads to additional nails or becomes deeply established, makes treatment considerably faster and more effective.
