Resolving Arch and Heel Pain from Walking Barefoot at Home

The most common sign of plantar fasciitis is a sharp, shooting pain in the bottom of your foot when you get out of bed in the morning, after standing for prolonged periods of time, or when you stand up after sitting for a while.  It’s also common to experience pain after you exercise, not during your workout.

There are two reasons people will start to experience this now:

1) Walking barefoot on hard surfaces allows our foot to collapse which can lead to a tremendous amount of stress not only to the foot but also to the rest of the body. Our feet naturally pronate during the gait cycle, however when we walk barefoot we pronate for a longer period of time, which then alters the biomechanics and distribution of pressure and weight across the foot.

2) Home workouts in inappropriate footwear or barefoot exercises are almost as bad if not worse than walking barefoot as you’re putting unnecessary strain onto your plantar fascia.

How can you treat foot pain?

Proper footwear at home: During quarantine, I had the opportunity to evaluate new foot gear that I believe will help promote good foot health while you are at home.   My highest recommendation for a comfortable shoe that can be worn at home all day with proper arch support are sandals by Ascent Footware as seen on the image above.

If the following recommended home treatments found here do not ease your pain after one week, I would suggest scheduling an appointment to discuss Custom Orthotics,  Amnio injections, and/or  (EPAT) Shockwave Therapy.  Each of these treatments are discounted and part of our Special November promotions found here.

Alternatively, your doctor may recommend a minimally invasive procedure for Plantar Fasciitis, Achilles Tendonitis or Posterior Tibial Tendinitis called Tenex. This is a highly effective five minute minimally invasive procedure with immediate weight bearing and a quick recovery, to fully resolve your chronic foot pain while enabling you to get back to work and resume activity as quickly as possible.  The Tenex procedure is covered by most insurance providers.

Resolving plantar warts and fungal nails

I  strongly advise against wearing outdoor shoes indoors to avoid the unnecessary and non hygienic transfer of bacteria and viruses from the environment into our homes. A convenient new shoe that recently entered the market are Muvez shoes (as seen in image above).  Muvez shoes are indoor slippers with a detachable outdoor sneaker sole.   These shoes are not only stylish, but convenient if you do not typically remove your outdoor shoes when at home. The outdoor sneaker sole easily comes off when you arrive at home turning into an indoor slipper and then quickly attaches when you leave to become an appropriate outdoor walking shoe.

If you’re walking barefoot at home, you can pick up Plantar Warts from a spouse or roommate, if they have the virus.  For this reason, I don't recommend walking barefoot at home, especially if you have hardwood, tile, or stone floors for dermatological and biomechanical reasons mentioned above.  If you have contracted plantar warts, we have a cutting edge technology called SWIFT on promotion for the month of November that can get rid of even the most stubborn of warts.

Like plantar warts, Athlete’s Foot can be contagious and brought into your home by outdoor shoes.  It usually produces itchy, dry, scaling skin. In more severe cases, inflammation, cracks, and blisters may form.  If left untreated, Athlete's Foot can infect your nails leading to discolored, thickened, Fungal NailsClearANail is the latest and most cutting edge technology used to effectively and painlessly treat Fungal Nails, by producing small micro-holes in the nail to allow anti-fungal medication to penetrate deep into the infected area.  ClearANail is also part of our promotion for the month of November.
