Left untreated, it can permanently affect an athlete’s push-off strength and long-term joint health. Understanding what actually happens during a turf toe injury explains why it deserves far more respect than its casual-sounding name suggests.
Turf toe occurs when the big toe joint bends upward far beyond its normal range of motion, typically during a push-off, sudden stop, or forceful pivot. This usually happens when an athlete’s foot is planted firmly on the ground while the rest of the body keeps moving forward. That motion drives the big toe into an unnatural upward angle against a rigid playing surface.
This hyperextension places tremendous strain on the plantar plate and surrounding ligaments that stabilize the big toe joint. In milder cases, these structures simply stretch or sprain mildly. In more severe cases, the ligaments can partially or completely tear, and the joint capsule itself may sustain damage.
